Joy Nott is a Vice President and Managing Consultant based in the Toronto, Ontario area and specializes in matters of customs and international trade for both Canada and the U.S. based clients. Joy brings over 20 years of experience in customs compliance to the J.P.Morgan Global Trade Management Consulting team.
Prior to joining J.P.Morgan, Joy spent a number of years developing her expertise employed as a Senior Manager with public accounting firms of KPMG LLP and Deloitte & Touche LLP as a Customs and International Trade consultant. The accounting firm environment provided her with extensive experience related to advising multinational clients in terms of meeting import and export requirements while minimizing costs. Her experience with professional tax and supply chain advisers has given her a background rich in understanding how customs and trade issues play an important role in developing corporate strategies. Her experience in advising how matters such as income tax transfer pricing and customs valuation fit into complex international restructuring plans have been key to her success as a consultant.
She joined the professional accounting firms as a consultant after 10 years of varied experience in senior management roles with well-established customs brokers/freight forwarders.
In other positions, Joy spent 2 years in the Nortel Networks global customs compliance team as a project leader, where she examined broad issues such as customs valuation, tariff classification, duty relief, export and import controls, rules of origin, seizures and forfeitures, customs automation, and internal auditing systems.
In other areas, Joy has advised clients in terms of meeting the requirements of the North American Free Trade Agreement for goods imported into Canada and the U.S., as well as the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) and the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA) for goods exported from Canada to Chile and Israel respectively.
Joy has assisted also clients in becoming registered for the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) and Partners in Protection (PIP) programs, obtaining favourable National Customs Rulings and has presented voluntary disclosures to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the US Customs Border Protection (CBP) on behalf of clients.
More recently, Joy has worked with a number of Canadian and US companies helping them to better understand Canadian export regulations for controlled goods and the US re-export regulations that apply to Canadian export shipments.
Joy’s credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec in 1987. She quickly established that trade and customs was where her career would be most satisfying and she sought and received honours when writing for her qualified customs brokers’ status in 1990. In 1993, Joy gained her professional customs brokerage status. She is currently enrolled in the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) working towards her professional designation in that area.
Joy is also on the Board of Directors for IECanada, Co-Chair of the IECanada Exports Committee, a member of the Canadian Society of Customs Brokers and on the Board of Directors for the Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT).
